Instructions
1. Prepare the Ingredients
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Grease a large baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
- Cook the sausage in a skillet over medium heat until browned and fully cooked. Set aside.
2. Make the Creamy Sauce
- In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until golden, creating a roux.
- Gradually whisk in the milk and cream, ensuring no lumps form.
- Add the Dijon mustard, garlic powder, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Simmer until thickened (about 5 minutes). Remove from heat.
3. Assemble the Casserole
- Arrange half of the sliced potatoes at the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
- Layer half of the cooked sausage and onions on top of the potatoes.
- Pour half of the creamy sauce over the sausage and potatoes.
- Sprinkle with half of the shredded cheese.
- Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes, sausage, sauce, and cheese.
4. Bake the Casserole
- Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 40 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
- Let the casserole rest for 10 minutes before serving.
