Cheesy Potato Gratin

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Prepare the cream mixture: In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and onion (if using), and cook until soft and fragrant. Pour in the cream (or milk), and season with salt, pepper, and thyme. Heat until warm but not boiling.
  3. Layer the potatoes: In a greased baking dish, arrange a layer of potato slices. Pour a portion of the cream mixture over the potatoes, then sprinkle some shredded cheese. Repeat the layering process until all the potatoes, cream, and cheese are used.
  4. Top with cheese: For the final layer, pour the remaining cream mixture and sprinkle a generous amount of shredded cheese and Parmesan on top.
  5. Bake: Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the top is golden and the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.
  6. Cool and serve: Let the gratin cool for a few minutes before serving.
