Activate the Yeast In a small bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the mixture, stirring gently. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes, until it becomes foamy. This is an essential step to ensure the yeast is active.
Prepare the Dough In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil. Stir until it starts to form a dough. If the dough is too sticky, add a tablespoon of flour at a time until it can be handled.
Knead the Dough Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8–10 minutes, until the dough becomes smooth and elastic. You can also use a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment if you prefer.
First Rise Place the kneaded dough into a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and allow it to rise in a warm area for about 1–1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size. This step gives the buns their light, airy texture.
Shape the Buns Once the dough has doubled, punch it down to release excess air. Divide it into 12 equal pieces (or more if you prefer smaller buns) and shape each into a ball. Place them on a greased baking sheet or arrange in a round cake pan for pull-apart buns.
Second Rise Cover the dough balls and let them rise for another 30–40 minutes, or until they have puffed up nicely.
Preheat the Oven
While the buns are on their second rise, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Prepare the Garlic Butter Topping In a small bowl, combine melted butter, minced garlic, salt, and chopped parsley. Stir well to blend the flavors. If desired, add grated Parmesan for a cheesy, savory twist.
Bake the Buns Brush the garlic butter topping generously over the buns. Bake for 15–18 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown. If desired, sprinkle more Parmesan during the last few minutes of baking.
Brush with Garlic Butter Again As soon as you take the buns out of the oven, brush them with any remaining garlic butter. This final coating enhances the flavor and keeps them moist.
Serve Warm and Enjoy! These buns are best served warm from the oven. Enjoy with marinara sauce for dipping, or as a side with pasta, soup, or salad.
