Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Potatoes and Oven
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or nonstick spray.
Step 2: Make the Cream Sauce
- In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
- Sprinkle in the flour, whisking continuously, and cook for 1-2 minutes to make a roux.
- Gradually whisk in the milk and cream (if using), continuing to stir until the mixture is smooth and thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
- Add 1 cup of shredded cheese, whisking until melted and creamy. Season with salt, pepper, and paprika (if using).
Step 3: Layer the Potatoes
- Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in an even layer in the baking dish.
- Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes, spreading it to cover them evenly.
- Add the remaining potato slices on top, then pour the rest of the cheese sauce over them.
Step 4: Bake
- Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.
- Remove the foil and sprinkle the remaining ½ cup of shredded cheese on top. Continue baking, uncovered, for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.
Step 5: Garnish and Serve
Remove the dish from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh thyme or chopped parsley, and enjoy!
